Summary

“I come from a family forged by tragedies and bound by a remarkable, unbreakable love,” Hunter Biden writes in this deeply moving memoir of addiction, loss, and survival。

When he was two-years-old, Hunter Biden was badly injured in a car accident that killed his mother and baby sister。 In 2015, he suffered the devastating loss of his beloved big brother, Beau, who died of brain cancer at the age of forty-six。 These hardships were compounded by the collapse of his marriage and a years-long battle with drug and alcohol addiction。

In Beautiful Things, Hunter recounts his descent into substance abuse and his tortuous path to sobriety。 The story ends with where Hunter is today—a sober married man with a new baby, finally able to appreciate the beautiful things in life。

Great bookWow。 I just read the last page and the only word in my mind is "wow"。 What a crazy life Hunter lived, and his description of it felt very raw。 How easily one can slip through the rabbit hole of despair, over and over again。 Read this book! Well written and excellent use of the English language。 Have many mixed feelings regarding Hunter Biden's memoir so soon after ceasing to use and drink。 His dependence upon "hard" seems more of a privileged white male who simply felt adrift in life following his strong brother's death。 How difficult it must have been to have been Jill Biden, as Hunter's stepmom (aka "mom"), whom he barely mentions or gives an affirming nod to throughout this book。 She has devoted her life to raising both young b Well written and excellent use of the English language。 Have many mixed feelings regarding Hunter Biden's memoir so soon after ceasing to use and drink。 His dependence upon "hard" seems more of a privileged white male who simply felt adrift in life following his strong brother's death。 How difficult it must have been to have been Jill Biden, as Hunter's stepmom (aka "mom"), whom he barely mentions or gives an affirming nod to throughout this book。 She has devoted her life to raising both young boys from the day she married Joe Biden (five years after the death of his first wife and daughter)。 Beau was loving and accepted her immediately; never looking back。 Apparently Hunter has used that tragedy as an excuse for his life-long problems and quick decisions, which remind me of Prince Harry with Meghan Markle。 I doubt either marriage will be lengthy and more children will be hurt as both privileged white men dance through life in their selfish, destructive behaviors。To feel he is "well" and sober due to his wife, is not working the AA Program from what I've read。 Hunter is a dreamer and in love with the idea of love and family。 For him, yes, he probably has been through hell and back。 However, his hell in hundred dollar a night rooms with vehicles always at his disposal and clinics with top-notch medical care available anytime is something all other users, alcoholics, addictics don't have the luxury of dreaming about。 His first wife was so wise to stand up to him。 She save herself and their three girls from so much more pain and angst! Yet, he fails to give her the credit she deserves for her strength and courage。 This book is all about him and poor Hunter, who brought his problems upon himself。 His dad, President Joe Biden, had raised both his son's to be aware of the dangers of alcohol and hated drugs! What a difficult position to put your own parents and other family members in for years without sincere apologies or real attempts at sobriety。 This book should not have been written while still using and would have been a much more interesting memoir had it been at least 20-25 years of sobriety and Hunter had proved to himself he really can live a life of family love and appreciation, service to the community, real work as an attorney and painter and poet。 He hasn't done any of those things yet in a successful manner。 He's continued to be a privileged white man who has learned on his new wife for strength! She sounds dysfunctional, as well, to bring a child into the world with Hunter's many problems 。 。 。 but he has a lot of money (again, reminds me of Meghan Markle)。 Cannot recommend this book。 。。。more

Hunter Baden’s memoir includes his descent into the world of crack and alcohol addiction。 After years of abuse in spite of many treatment programs, he is presently living a healthy life with his wife Melissa and young son。

I listened to the audio version of this book, narrated by Hunter Biden himself。 I understand why it would be narrated by him, but his monotone style made the book feel a bit long and boring。 His voice lacked the emotion he spoke of while he was narrating。While reading, I found myself wondering how someone so deeply entrenched in drug use had such a great recollection of his drug using moments and what was happening around him。 Not to say I found his writings unbelievable, just to say it was a th I listened to the audio version of this book, narrated by Hunter Biden himself。 I understand why it would be narrated by him, but his monotone style made the book feel a bit long and boring。 His voice lacked the emotion he spoke of while he was narrating。While reading, I found myself wondering how someone so deeply entrenched in drug use had such a great recollection of his drug using moments and what was happening around him。 Not to say I found his writings unbelievable, just to say it was a thought that ran through my mind many times。 Also, he frequently speaks of his innocence regarding some accusations that have been made by others and I again wondered how he is so sure he didn’t make some poor decisions while being under the influence of crack cocaine and other substances。This book grabbed me from the beginning, droned on and on in the middle with a little too many details of days on end of drug use, and then ended with a beautiful epilogue。The book feels a little like someone trying to atone for all of his misgivings over many years。 Hunter speaks highly of his family who has loved him unconditionally, through thick and thin。 I think what was missing for me was a little bit of remorsefulness or apology to all the people in his life who must have felt hurt and sad as they watched his tortured life unfold, especially his ex wife who had to raise her children alone, and his children who had to keep moving forward while he spiraled out of control。 。。。more

Unbearably sad and incredibly raw。 The lengthy sections dealing with Hunter Biden's crack addiction were very difficult to listen to。 Ultimately, though, Biden's downward trajectory reversed through a chance meeting that changed his life in a transformative way, and turned despair into hope。Hunter Biden was an excellent narrator of his own story。 Unbearably sad and incredibly raw。 The lengthy sections dealing with Hunter Biden's crack addiction were very difficult to listen to。 Ultimately, though, Biden's downward trajectory reversed through a chance meeting that changed his life in a transformative way, and turned despair into hope。Hunter Biden was an excellent narrator of his own story。 。。。more

I typically don't like to "rate" memoirs because it feels very judgy - I mean, really, who am I to rate someone's account of their life put into their own words? Not sure if it was the writing or the content that wasn’t appealing, but I stopped reading it when he began talking about his descent。

If you’ve read about Hunter’s story online- this book might be repetitive。 But, it is still a great book about his journey through addition and dealing with grief after the death of this brother。

What is hope? With his autobiographical, 'Beautiful Things', Hunter Biden shows his readers hope, as he experienced it: an excruciatingly slow acceptance of the finality of his brother's death; unexpectedly and in the nick of time, finding the right woman partner; an unpredictable recovery from the death spiral of alcoholism and crack cocaine addiction; and ditching international business consulting to focus on writing, art, and his family。 Read this book for a direct look at hope and why it's r What is hope? Incredible memoir。 It is raw, poignant, and so revealing。 I've not read many firsthand accounts of a drug addict but this one stands out。 Hunter Biden seemingly does not hold back on details of what a complete track wreck was his life。 Improbable that he's turned himself around now -- but I take him at his word that he has done so。 I wish him nothing but the best going forward in his continued journey to stay off drugs and stop drinking alcohol。 It was so compelling that I read it within 24 hour Incredible memoir。 It is raw, poignant, and so revealing。 I've not read many firsthand accounts of a drug addict but this one stands out。 Hunter Biden seemingly does not hold back on details of what a complete track wreck was his life。 Improbable that he's turned himself around now -- but I take him at his word that he has done so。 I wish him nothing but the best going forward in his continued journey to stay off drugs and stop drinking alcohol。 It was so compelling that I read it within 24 hours。 。。。more

The book description here on the site calls this memoir “deeply moving”。 I would second that。 Near the beginning Hunter Biden details the last days with his brother Beau and caused copious and heartfelt tears to flow。 The courage of this man, the courage of the whole family, makes an awesome foray into respect, admiration and empathy。

When I got this book I thought it might be fun in a sordid, tawdry sort of way。 I have to admit that I do have some affection for Hunter Biden because unlike his father and brother, he comes across as a somewhat relatable figure。 He’s a moron, but clearly fancies himself an intellectual。 There’s something about people like Hunter that I find both charming and amusing。 As I’m in the middle of rewatching ‘The Sopranos’, I came to the conclusion that Hunter’s a combination of Christopher Moltisanti When I got this book I thought it might be fun in a sordid, tawdry sort of way。 I have to admit that I do have some affection for Hunter Biden because unlike his father and brother, he comes across as a somewhat relatable figure。 He’s a moron, but clearly fancies himself an intellectual。 There’s something about people like Hunter that I find both charming and amusing。 As I’m in the middle of rewatching ‘The Sopranos’, I came to the conclusion that Hunter’s a combination of Christopher Moltisanti and “Little” Carmine Lupertazzi, both of whom are among my favorite characters on the show。 Unfortunately, ‘Beautiful Things’ reads like something concocted by a PR consultant to rehabilitate Hunter’s image—he’s not just another political fail son—and make the Biden family as a whole seem normal and loving。 The Bidens are just like your family except that Hunter’s father was one of the most powerful men in the government before he was 30 and they lived in a house once owned by the DuPont family。 What a normal family。 The first portion of the book consists of maudlin stories about his upbringing in Delaware—the Cayman Islands of America—and his family, particularly his Christlike older brother Beau。 To be frank, their relationship is a bit odd。 Hunter speaks to and of Beau like a widower。 The Bidens sure are a bunch of weepy Micks。 Too much of the rest of the book is him defending his father’s record and his own professional and public life。 He spends a great deal of time trying to have you believe that he didn’t trade on his family’s name and he earned his position in life。 One of the more amusing anecdotes he sincerely tells is about how he got into Yale Law school, not because his last name is Biden, but because he had great grades and wrote an amazing poem。 He got his jobs working for corporate law firms and Ukrainian energy companies—where he earned $50k/month—because he worked hard and was qualified。 Only a real Democratic Party hack could truly believe any of this (If you do I have an amazing bridge spanning the East River to sell you)。 It’s only interesting when he talks about his drug addictions and his latent wish to be a writer/artist in the vein of Bukowski, but the former gets repetitive after awhile and he doesn’t dwell on the latter。 I’m glad I didn’t have to pay to read this。 。。。more

The first chapter made me ugly cry。 The rest made me wonder how honest Hunter Biden was really being - not about the addiction and the using, but about his sobriety and the relationships with his family members。 He was married to his first wife for twenty-four years and destroyed their marriage with his addiction and other behaviors。 Yet, he can't seem to find any empathy for her pain (he abandoned them, refused to get clean, and left her to raise their three children)。 He also seemingly has no The first chapter made me ugly cry。 The rest made me wonder how honest Hunter Biden was really being - not about the addiction and the using, but about his sobriety and the relationships with his family members。 He was married to his first wife for twenty-four years and destroyed their marriage with his addiction and other behaviors。 Yet, he can't seem to find any empathy for her pain (he abandoned them, refused to get clean, and left her to raise their three children)。 He also seemingly has no empathy for or connection with the child he has with a woman in Arkansas。 If you didn't already know about this situation, his casual mention of it in the book may lead you to believe paternity was not confirmed。 The clear wealth and race privilege in his avoiding law enforcement in precarious illegal situations also is not dealt with which makes me uncomfortable。My review is not politically biased - I'm very left on the political spectrum - but as much as the beginning touched me, the last half left me wondering how much of the real Hunter Biden anyone ever sees。 。。。more

Heartbreaking, scary, life-affirming, and beautifully written。 I pray that Hunter Biden is able to continue to deal successfully with his addictions。 This was a difficult story to read because Biden was unflinchingly honest about his choices and mistakes。 Most importantly, he takes full responsibility for his decisions, never blaming anyone or anything for how his life has evolved。 The love that flows through this memoir is an inspiration。
